These are a few of the most frequently asked questions people have when they begin to think about becoming a foster parent. Fostering is a service about which people can easily have only stray pieces of information and the information they do have may be inaccurate.
Fostering is about providing a safe and secure family environment at a crucial point in a child or young person’s life. For the moment, you are in the role of being a parent for the child in your care. The length of time you are in that role varies from child to child. It might be overnight in an emergency situation or for years in a long-term placement.
At any given time in the UK, there are thousands of children who need foster care. There is no specific foster child profile. Some are a sibling group, brothers and sisters who are in need of a temporary home and all they have is each other. Some have disabilities and some have behavioural difficulties. Some are babies and some are teenagers. Foster children come in all different age groups. There are several different types of foster care.
If you are interested in learning more about fostering, your first step is to contact Capstone Foster Care to make an inquiry and obtain further information. Before an application to be a foster carer is approved, an assessment process that includes police, health, and home checks is conducted and that may take up to six months. During the process and while you are a foster carer, Capstone Foster Care provides foster carer training & support. There are support groups available and a network of other carers and professional resources to help you with any situations or difficulties.
You already know what it is like to care for a child. Your experiences and skills as a mum can make a difference in a foster child’s life. You know that being patient, understanding, and able to listen when the child needs to be listened to are important in your role as a mum. You also know that being a mum is time-consuming and takes a great deal of energy.
If you are interested in opening your heart and your home to a foster child, take a long look at your current schedule to make sure you have the time and energy to engage with a child who is going through a difficult enough situation to have been taken out of the family home by the local authority. Talk to your friends and family and get their feedback. They are the ones who know you best. You will also need to have space in your home to provide a separate bedroom for each foster child.
