Fostering a disabled child

Navigation:

Here at Capstone Foster Care, we have changed the lives of many young people and children in care. The diversity of our foster carers is also reflected in the diversity of our children in care – meaning that we have been able to provide loving and secure homes for many disabled children and children with learning disabilities. Learn more about how to foster a disabled child from our guide.

How to foster a disabled child

Fostering a disabled child requires many of the same characteristics, skillsets and qualities it takes to foster a child who does not have a disability. A lot of the skills needed to foster a disabled child come from existing personality traits – if you are patient, understanding, compassionate and have a desire to change a young person’s life, fostering disabled children could be the right path for you.

As a foster carer with Capstone Foster Care, you will be well equipped to offer specialist care to children who may have learning difficulties, physical disabilities, autism, down syndrome or other medical conditions. This will include accommodating for foster children who need to use a wheelchair, children who do not wish to show eye contact or affection (which can be traits of Autism), or are on a restricted diet for medical reasons – which Capstone will help you with every step of the way.

Fostering with a disability

Looking for information on if you can foster a child if you are disabled? Our guide has you covered. We also have provided a case study on one of our Midlands based carers, Marcus Pinnock, who has shared his fostering story with us – providing advice and tips on fostering with a disability for any other potential carers.

Support for carers fostering a disabled child

When fostering down syndrome children, fostering a child with Autism, or fostering a child with learning disabilities, the unwavering support you will receive from Capstone will remain the same. We are proud to offer our carers 24/7 support – as well as specialist training to ensure you are providing everything required for the child to develop and grow in a safe and nurtured environment.
