LGBT Fostering Mythbusting

Navigation:

Often, there are many myths and preconceptions around the idea of fostering, and who can foster.

This means that often, many people rule themselves out of being eligible to foster based on incorrect myths. However, regardless of your religion, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation, none of these factors will determine whether or not you can foster. Learn more about common LGBT foster care myths to find out more about if you can foster now.

Can I foster if I am gay or bisexual?

Yes, you can foster if you are gay or bisexual. Sexual orientation is not a deciding factor on whether or not you can become a foster carer. The main thing is that you’re able to meet the fostering requirements, and that you can provide a young child with a loving and stable home.

Can I foster if I am transgender?

Yes, you can foster if you are transgender. Being transgender (and your gender in general) is not something that will determine whether or not you are eligible to foster.

I’m in a same-sex relationship – can I foster?

Yes – you can foster if you are in a same-sex relationship. In fact, same-sex foster couples are even sought after and encouraged, so this would in no way hinder your ability to be able to foster a child.

I’m gay but recently divorced – can I still foster?

Being gay in no way affects your ability to foster a child. You can also foster if you are a single parent – as long as you meet the foster care requirements, and you are financially and emotionally stable enough to take care of a young child. However, regarding your divorce, this will likely be mentioned during your assessment process. This process is a full account of your life from birth to now as marriages are significant relationships, it’s important to discuss this. Divorce can bring financial instability, changes to the support network and changes to your emotional state – so it’s important to understand the implications of the divorce during the assessment process.
