When you are a foster carer, the child who comes to live in your home, even for a short term, should feel that he or she is part of your family. Children are usually placed in care because something devastating has happened to their family and the local authorities have stepped in. All too often this involves trauma which causes their behaviour to be difficult. It is important to have the type of personality that can accept negative behaviour from a child for what it is. Patience and energy are fundamental when you take on the role of a foster parent. Consistency and reliability are a large component of fostering.
Ask your family and friends what they think. These are the people who know you best and in a position to give you honest and direct feedback about how they view you in the role of foster carer.
There are a few specific requirements that Capstone Foster Care has of foster homes. One is that a home where children under five are placed should be non-smoking. Also, your home should not have aggressive or dangerous pets. There should be enough space to provide each foster child with his or her own bedroom that is large enough to contain a single bed and furniture such as a chest of drawers and a wardrobe.
Your home may be rented so long as the landlord agrees that fostering is acceptable. As for your living arrangements, you can be single, married, gay or straight, young (21 or over) or old. Your race or religion are not factors either.
The allowance you receive depends on your location and the age of the child. There are three geographic divisions for assessing allowances: London, South East, and the rest of the UK. The allowance you receive also depends on the ages of the children, your skills and the special requirements of the child.
Placement teams and social workers will discuss any placement with you to make sure that the match has a high likelihood of being very good. The ultimate decision is up to you.
Whether you apply through your local authority or through an independent fostering agency such as Capstone Foster Care, during the application process, you will undergo a health check and all members of your household over the age of 18 will undergo a Disclosure and Barring (DBS) check. Training, help, and support are provided during the application process and throughout your fostering work.
