The difference a loving foster family can make - J

A note from foster carer, Lesley about foster child, J:

“J’s story started about 10.5 years ago. He was 10 when he came to live with us. It was previously assumed that he had ADHD and he had experienced rejection as a result of this. After being with us for some time, he started to flourish at school. He was just like a sponge soaking up all of the information. We soon realised that the behaviour displayed that was previously linked to ADHD was actually down to frustration and not down to ADHD at all. J has worked incredibly hard and achieved so much in the years since, not least getting into university.

J was such a lovely boy and now an amazing man.

He is a huge part of our family and always will be. We are so proud of J and the person he has become. We never doubted how far he would go and so we have not been surprised by his success. He has been such a joy to watch grow and develop and although we miss him greatly; we know that it won’t be for long as he will always come home in the holidays.”

A huge well done to J. This note received from Lesley clearly illustrates just how much of a difference a foster family can make to a child’s life and the opportunities that can be given with understanding and patience. We often hear from foster carers about the little things that make such a big difference. In this instance, that was taking the time to get to know a child and firmly believing in them until they started to believe in themselves.

Have you considered opening your home to a child like J?

We’d love to hear from you. Sadly, there are many children like J waiting for someone to believe in them and not enough foster families to help them. Please get in touch for an informal chat about fostering to see if you could make a difference to a child’s life.
