June and Adrian have been approved foster carers with Capstone Foster Care since June 2019, and love being able to open their home to welcome children who need their love and care. Adrian and I have been approved foster carers with Capstone since June 2019, and we love being able to open our home and welcome children who need our love and care.
We have both wanted to foster for a while, but we only really decided to start the process after I had experienced working with foster children in my previous role. I could see how amazing they all were and all they needed was a loving home and a family they could call their own. It was sad to see so many of these children not being able to be placed with foster families because there is a shortage of carers and that is why we decided now was the right time for us to apply to become foster carers.
We have three of our own children, who are now all grown up. A son, who lives with his girlfriend and then we have our two daughters, aged 17 and 21, who still live at home and we also have a family dog called Theo. We all love being outdoors. We regularly go on walks together, we enjoy biking, horse-riding and I like swimming too, so we’re a very very active household.
So far on our journey, we’ve had two boys, aged 12 and 8 on a short-term foster placement together who have now left as their placement came to and end, and we’ve now got another short-term foster placement who has been with us for just over a year.
When we first talked about becoming foster carers, our kids responded really warmly towards the idea. Both our daughters had spent time at the school I used to work at and so had met some of the children there. They felt excited to be able to offer children in need of fostering a supportive, safe and loving home.
It’s just so wonderful to see. You can sometimes live in a bit of a bubble within your own family, so fostering really does open up your eyes to the wider picture and that not everyone is fortunate enough to have a safe and loving environment to grow. Giving them experiences they may not have had before and seeing their little faces so happy is just the best feeling.
You can never tell when you embark on something like this how exactly you’re going to feel about it when it actually happens.
The support from Captone Foster Care has been outstanding. It’s amazing to have our supervising social worker there whenever we need her, and she knows me absolutely inside out. Actually, I think she knows me better than I know myself, which is lovely!
For anyone out there thinking about fostering, we would say just do it! That’s what we did, and we’ve had no regrets since. You couldn’t choose a better agency than Capstone Foster Care to take you on that journey, because the training and support that you receive is just outstanding and that’s exactly what you need. We’re having such an amazing journey and we’re really looking forward to our future with Capstone.
