We are appalled and sickened by the racial abuse that has been aimed towards England players, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka following the penalty shootout defeat to Italy on Sunday in the Euro 2020 final. Football is much more than trophies. Whilst we're all disappointed with the result, we should all be proud of the England football team for what they have achieved, on and off the pitch, and how they have brought the country together after such a difficult period.
We want to acknowledge that this behaviour does not just affect the players the racism is directed at, but has an effect on wider society. We know that many of our foster carers, staff and, children and young people will have found the comments triggering and very upsetting.
We stand in solidarity with Marcus, Jadon and Bukayo who were part of a team that created history, and want to drown out the sound of the abuse and hate which is unacceptable.
