When you become a foster carer, it is important to remember that it will not only be you on your fostering journey, but it will also involve the whole family. When a child is placed with you, one key factor is ensuring you welcome them in and make them feel like a part of your family.
Some of our amazing foster carers, D and C, demonstrated this by ensuring the two young people placed with them settled into their family well and their close family members have also incorporated them into their lives.
Carole Bell, Senior Supervising Social Worker, shared this heart-warming update with us, she said:
“I did a supervision with Capstone foster carers, D and C, and it was absolutely delightful to hear how the young people they are currently caring for had enjoyed a wonderful Christmas and New Year, despite all the lockdown restrictions placed upon them. They have done an amazing job of ensuring the children were occupied and engaged in a true ‘family’ Christmas.
“However, in my view, on Christmas Eve, something truly remarkable took place. D and C’s son and his partner, who have a baby daughter, came into the home (they are in their support bubble) and gave a special Christmas card to the young people.
“The young people thought it was just an ordinary Christmas card but what it contained surprised and overwhelmed them both. D and C’s son and partner had invited them both to become Godparents for their daughter, how amazing!
“This was a really powerful moment for both the young people as D and C’s son explained to them the importance of the role and the responsibilities that came with it and said how much they both wanted them to be her official Godparents.
“D said this was more emotional for one of the young people, as when he was placed with her, he did not always see eye to eye with her son, but he has since matured, and her son now has a great relationship with him. The young person looks up to her son as a positive role model.
“D said that they had only been made aware of their son and his partner’s intentions the night before, so it was not their idea or plan, but D feels that this will really demonstrate to both of the young people just how much they are valued and intrinsic members of their family and always will be.”
This is a great example of how fostering can touch the hearts of all members of your family and have a positive impact on you all. We want to thank all our foster carers who provide this level of family inclusion to the children and young people they care for.
