21st June, 2021
It’s pride month in June! A time where millions of people come together in support of the LGBT+ community.
Pride is held each year in June to mark the Stonewall riots in 1969, where police attempted to raid a bar in New York called the Stonewall Inn. The Stonewall Inn was considered one of the few safe havens for many for the LGBT+ community in New York at the time and the raid sparked an uprising for LGBT+ people to begin fighting for their rights of equality across society. Whilst great strides have been taken year on year since 1969 towards equality, we still in 2021 find that potential LGBT+ foster carers very tentatively ask the question, can I apply to become a foster parent?
One of our foster carers recently coined the answer as far as Capstone Foster Care is concerned perfectly.
Lots of children in the care system have faced prejudice of some kind in their lives. Being in care comes with a label that can carry many preconceptions. Advocating for a child’s rights as they grow in all kinds of different circumstances is part of being a foster carer and something all our carers feel incredibly passionate about. Life experience from our foster carers is so valuable to the young people in our care and in some ways is something that no amount of training can teach.
From our amazing foster carers, Paul and Dean:
“During the process and as foster parents we had prepared for some level of discrimination being a same sex couple however, throughout our 5 years as foster carers we have been shown nothing but respect and professionalism by the families of looked after children and professionals that we have worked with at Capstone Foster Care.”
