Therapeutic Foster Care

Therapeutic fostering is a specialist type of foster care that is tailored to support children and young people who may have dealt with trauma, abuse or any other kind of severe disruption prior to being placed into foster care.

What is therapeutic fostering?

There is a high demand for people interested in caring for children and young people with complex needs and challenging behaviour. This type of fostering is known as therapeutic foster care. The main goal as a therapeutic carer is to help children with their social and emotional development. When a child experiences a challenging start in life, they may require extra help to flourish. As a therapeutic foster carer, you can provide a sense of stability to a young person with complex needs.

What does therapeutic foster care involve?

In the case of therapeutic placements, a foster home is not just a home, it’s a safe and comfortable sanctuary for children and young people whose early environments have not met their needs.

Therapeutic fostering requires special training and education, and you will receive ongoing training and support, guiding you through the process of caring for a child or young person with complex needs. You will become part of a wider therapy team and, in doing so, you can provide the best possible care. As a therapeutic foster carer, you’ll provide a secure family setting where a child or young person can live and thrive, as well as a therapeutic environment to help them overcome trauma and feel they are part of a community.

Training and support for therapeutic foster carers

Here at Capstone, we’re pleased to have created and developed our Multi-disciplinary Assessment Treatment & Therapy Service (MATTS). This is a service unique to the Capstone Foster Care group and is a specialist therapeutic fostering service, providing enhanced support and resources for foster carers and children. Through this service, we provide more children with a family home that meets their needs, whilst also ensuring they receive support from a clinical therapeutic team.

As a therapeutic foster carer, you will work with the child and learn as much as possible about their circumstances, responses, and emotional state. In doing so, you’ll know the best approach to help the child’s psychological, emotional, and social development.

When fostering with us, you receive a wealth of ongoing support from a qualified team. We’re here to ensure a positive outcome for the child or young person in care, through supporting you to be the best foster carer you can be.

How much do therapeutic foster carers get paid?

How much foster carers get paid often depends on a number of factors such as the type of foster care, the needs of the child or young person and geographical location. Learn more about how much therapeutic foster carers get paid including specific rates.
