One of our social workers in the South West attended the Torbay Children in Care Awards in November. One of our young people had been nominated so her, her fostering family and their supervising social worker were all invited to the awards ceremony. Sadly, it was virtual but Torbay still made it a wonderful experience.
E has been outstanding in her progression to secondary education and gains several bonus points per week for her effort and achievement at school. She is excelling in most subjects and her attitude and effort to learning are exemplary. E has worked really hard during lockdowns and home learning. Her determination to achieve does not faulter.
E’s efforts were recognised at the Children in Care Awards with a certificate of achievement and a gift voucher. E’s carers are immensely proud of her and are thrilled with her progression and her aspirations. E had a lovely evening and her carers said, “everyone enjoyed it!”
During the awards, athlete Kriss Akabusi gave an inspirational and very funny talk to the children, sharing his story of being in care. He said his social worker was always there for him and he, along with his sergeant when he joined the army, influenced him to aspire to be what he wanted to be… they believed in him and helped him believe in himself! The talk and slide show included Kirss’s World Championship relay win. What an achievement and a wonderful message about being part of a team. It was lovely to see all the children watching and listening to him and commenting on the live chat.
It was also so lovely to see our foster carers and family all cheering on our young person in their kitchen, enjoying pizza and sharing the experience with her!
